Great thing to see last night…

12 10 2010

I’m pleased with what I saw Monday night, after the San Francisco Giants punched their tickets for the National League Championship series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

After the Giants defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-2 last night to win their division series 3 games to 1, retiring Braves manager Bobby Cox took one final curtain call, taking in the farewell salute from the fans.

And the Giants, who had not won a playoff series in eight years, paused their celebrations, and also tipped their caps to Cox.

Not only was it, to me, a great show of sportsmanship, but it also showed the universal belief in Major League Baseball that one of the greatest managers in the game has called it a career.

Cox amassed a total of 2,504 career regular season wins, to put him fourth on the all-time list. He should be a lock for Cooperstown.

Congratulations, Bobby, on a great career, and all the best to you on your retirement from baseball.
