Could not be happier for Roy Halladay…

29 05 2010

Earlier Saturday, Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay retired all 27 batters he faced, pitching the 20th perfect game in Major League history.

This is excellent – no one deserves this more than Halladay. I’m glad that he’s having a great season – his first season not wearing a Blue Jays uniform.

Like many other Blue Jays fans, I was disappointed to see Halladay leave Toronto, but I understood his reasons. The one thing missing from his career is a World Series ring, and that’s one thing that the Blue Jays were not going to be able to give him any time soon.

With the Phillies, he may well get the chance at a World Series. All three National League divisions are fairly tight a little over 1/4 of the way through the year, and the Phillies, after having gone through a mini-slump, have now won two in a row, and are leading the NL East, with a won-lost record very similar to most of the other division leaders in baseball.

Now, it’s too soon to tell whether the Phillies will be playing baseball in October, but with Doc Halladay heading their pitching staff, their chances to repeat as National League Champions look pretty good.

Congratulations on the perfect game, Roy!
