Hard to think of anyone more deserving of this honour…

1 04 2010

I was reading one of the sites that I visit on a daily basis, www.Fadoo.ca (a site created for FAN 590’s Bob McCown, the host of Prime Time Sports), and in today’s “Parting Shots” section, there’s word about a group on Facebook who are working to speed up the process to enshrine former NHL coach Pat Burns into the Hockey Hall Of Fame.

Burns’ resume is impressive. A career won-lost record of 501-350-175 as a head coach. Won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2002-03, plus a Stanley Cup appearance in his first-ever year as a head coach, helming the Montreal Canadians to the finals. The only head coach to ever have won three Jack Adams Awards for head coach of the year.

However, time is not in Burns’ favour, hence the push to get Burns into the Hall of Fame now. Here’s the note from the organizers of the Facebook page:

“He retired from coaching because of recurring bouts with cancer. After his latest diagnosis (lung cancer), he decided to forego treatment. Pat Burns will not be with us much longer. Let’s pressure the HHOF selection committee and the media to get Pat Burns fast-tracked into the Hockey Hall of Fame. While he and his family can enjoy it. While he can attend in person. And while he can bask in the ultimate, and well-deserved achievement of a stellar career cut short.”

I fully support this idea, and have signed up to the Facebook group, and if you’re a hockey fan who recognizes the contribution Pat Burns made during his time as a head coach, I urge you to lend your support too.
