Great baseball game tonight – congratulations Minnesota Twins!

6 10 2009

Now that is how a baseball tiebreaker game should be played: tooth and nail to the end!

Just watched the game that would decide the American League Central division champion: either the Detroit Tigers or the Minnesota Twins.

The season was definitely on the line here. The winner meets the New York Yankees Wednesday night in game one of the Division Series. The loser is done until 2010.

But I think the Twins had more on the line here. The HRH Metrodome, the Twins’ home since 1982, is to close at season’s end, and the Twins will open up a new ballpark next year. Sunday was to be the final game at the old park. Little did we know that the Twins would win that game and end up tied with the Tigers for the division lead, and that would force the tiebreaker tonight in Minnesota.

Would the Twins be able to keep playing baseball at the Metrodome for a little bit longer?

The Tigers got off to an early start in the tiebreaker, scoring 3 runs in the 3rd inning. But the Twins chipped away, and temporarily took the lead themselves in the 7th. But the Tigers would quickly tie it up again, 4-4 in the 8th.

It would stay that way until the Tigers scored a run in the 10th (yep…this game went to extra innings!). But the Twins equalized it and had a chance to win it that inning, only to be thwarted by a great double play by the Tigers!

After a scoreless 11th inning, the Tigers threatened big time in the 12th, with the bases loaded and only one out, but they failed to score. That would prove to be costly. In the bottom of the 12th, the Twins got a single from Alexi Casilla with two on and one out, and Carlos Gomez scored the winning run from second base, and with the victory, the Twins clinched the division!

So there will be at least one more game at the Metrodome this year, as part of the Americal League Divison Series against the Yankees – and possibly more, depending on how the Twins do in the playoffs.

Folks, this was an amazing game, with both teams having had chances to win it. Congratulations to the Twins on the win, and good luck against the Yankees!

Yes, I’m a Toronto Blue Jays fan, I admit it. But since they are not in the playoffs, I can speak as a baseball fan, and what we saw tonight was, indeed, baseball at its best, in my view.

I hope the rest of the playoffs are like this.
